The idea for this book came out of a fascination I developed a few years ago. Have you ever given your memories much thought? Not the actual memory, but the process in which it’s formed and retained. And really, how far can we trust our memories? The thing is, our memories, while a vital part of what makes us who we are, are also a result of the experiences we’ve had in our lives. They are formed as a result of the filters we’ve developed. How we view, understand, and retain information is not the same as someone else who may have stood right beside you.

My step-sister remembers me as a kid who did everything to get out of work, only taking one piece of wood into the house at a time while she took many. Okay, she has a point. I wasn’t trying to out-do anyone, but the way I remember it is different. In my memory she was so much bigger and stronger than I was, that I couldn’t compete. I recall helping to stack wood on her arms, and I really think I took more than one piece at a time…mostly. So, who’s right? Probably both of us and neither of us. We remember that chore by the way we felt. She probably wished I would do more so less responsibility and work fell on her. I wished I would start growing! I felt small and unable to keep up.

When writing stories from multiple points of views, I give a lot of thought to the filters my characters have in place. I know they will need to protect themselves from the dangers they believe are always present even if this isn’t true. Sometimes a character has to react to a situation in a way I don’t want them to, but anything different would be untrue to the person they are at that time in the story.
