The Christy Award: The Way It Should Be Won!
You guys, this is one of the craziest things that has ever happened to me. I was in no way expecting to win. In fact, I hadn’t even thought about what I’d say until a few minutes before the announcement. I mean, here I am, still shocked that I was a Christy Award finalist.
Tamara Alexander, yes that Tamara Alexander, was the presenter for my category. She started reading the first line, and I felt very confused because that was the first line of my book, and the other two books were written by Amanda Dykes and Charles Martin. Seriously, they are amazing writers. I’m not sure of all that happened next. There were tears and a goofy look from me. I’m told Chris Fabry, yet another amazing author, laughed a lot. Apparently I’m very entertaining when I’m stunned.
Hopefully I thanked everyone because I am truly thankful to all of you.
This is the kind of honor I hope I never take for granted. It joins many others like being a mom, a wife, a believer, and an author. Life isn’t always mountaintops. We all go through valleys, some deeper than others. But, friends, don’t forget about the beautiful moments you’ve had. Let those memories be a reminder that there are more great times to come.

The Way It Should Be Reached a Dream
Last week, one of my dreams came true. I’d written a list of long term goals years earlier, with one being a huge reach. I still had hope for this dream but assumed it to be many years down the road.
I’d asked for a Christy final.
On the morning of September 30, 2021, they announced the finalists. In the category of General Fiction, my name was called along with the title of what I feel at this time to be my most important novel, The Way It Should Be. Two weeks later, I still can’t believe it.
This honor is so far more than I could image. My editors, Rochelle Gloege and Raela Schoenherr deserve much of the credit, and I’m so thank for for them. They each added their own special insights and talents to the process.
One of my favorite places to find great titles is the list of Christy finalists. Check them out, and let me know which ones you’ve read.
Please join me on October 28th for the awards webcast. You can sign up to be a viewer here. Speakers include Philip Yancey, Amanda Dykes, Dallas Jenkins, Pete Peterson, and Chris Fabry.

About the book
Growing up along the Oregon coast, Cassie George has always been fascinated by the ocean. She’s used her studies in marine biology as a convenient excuse for staying away from her small hometown ever since her unplanned pregnancy. But when she receives a call that her aunt has suffered a stroke and has been hiding a Parkinson’s diagnosis, she knows she must return.
Cassie finds a mostly warm welcome from the quirky community–including her high school nemesis, Nora Milford. But Cassie is confused by the mysterious package that greets her as well, containing typed pages telling a story of an anonymous woman who seems to have ties to Cassie’s own life. As she begins to read more and investigate its implications, she’ll discover who she thought she was and who she wants to become are both about to change.
